Friend: Trayvon Martin encounter racially charged

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A friend of Trayvon Martin's who was on the phone with him shortly before his fatal fight with George Zimmerman testified Thursday that she thought the encounter was racially charged.

Rachel Jeantel testified for the second day in a row, saying she thought race was an issue because Martin told her he was being followed by a white man.

"He was being followed," Jeantel said.

Her answer came in response to questioning from defense attorney Don West about why she had given differing accounts about what she had heard over the phone when Martin first encountered Zimmerman on a rainy night on Feb. 26, 2012, at the Retreat at Twin Lakes townhome complex.

West suggested in his cross-examination that 18-year-old Jeantel had raised the racial issue in some accounts but not others. In some accounts, West implied, Jeantel said Zimmerman responded one way when he first encountered Martin, but in other accounts she said he responded another way. Jeantel gave her version of events in a deposition, in a letter to Martin's mother and in a recorded interview with an attorney for the Martin family.

Jeantel is one of the prosecution's most important witnesses because she bolsters the contention that Zimmerman was the aggressor. She was on the phone with Martin moments before he was fatally shot.

Jeantel testified Wednesday that her friend's last words were "Get off! Get off!" before the phone went silent. But on Thursday, under cross-examination, she conceded that she hadn't mentioned that in her account of what happened to Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton.

Jeantel recounted to jurors on Wednesday how Martin told her he was being followed by a man as he walked through the Retreat at Twin Lakes townhome complex on his way back from a convenience store to the home of his father's fiancee.

She testified that Martin described the man following him as "a creepy-ass cracker" and that he thought he had evaded him. But she said Martin told her a short time later the man was still behind him, and she told him to run.

Martin said Zimmerman was behind him and she heard Martin ask: "What are you following me for?"

In one account, according to West, she said Zimmerman responds, "What are you doing around here?" In another account, according to West, she says Zimmerman said, "What are you talking about?"

She then heard what sounded like Martin's phone earpiece dropping into wet grass, and she heard him say, "Get off! Get off!" The phone then went dead, she said.

Later, she bristled and teared up when West asked her why she didn't attend Martin's funeral and about lying about her age. She initially told Martin's parents she was a minor when she was 18. She said she didn't want to get involved in the case.

The exchanges also turned testy, including one moment when she urged West to move on to his next question: "You can go. You can go." And she gave him what seemed like a dirty look as he walked away after he had approached her on the stand to challenge her on differences between an initial interview she gave to Martin family attorney, Benjamin Crump, and a later deposition with the defense. Jeantel explained it by saying she "rushed" the interview with Crump because she didn't feel comfortable doing it.

And when the judge asked if both sides wanted to break for the day, prosecutors said they'd like to continue, believing the testimony could take another two hours, to which Jeantel reacted with surprise, repeating, "Two hours?" Instead, the judge decided to continue the cross examination Thursday, carefully instructing Jeantel to return at 9 a.m. and not discuss her testimony with anyone.

Jeantel's testimony was more subdued on Thursday and West took note of her calmer demeanor.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. Zimmerman followed Martin in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight.

Zimmerman has said he opened fire only after the teenager jumped him and began slamming his head against the concrete sidewalk. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic and has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and their supporters have claimed.

Iraq War vet pleads guilty in wife's death

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? An Iraq War veteran who initially pleaded insanity in the fatal shooting of his wife, a Milwaukee-area police officer, instead changed his plea to guilty Wednesday after two doctors concluded that his mental-health issues weren't severe enough to justify an insanity plea.

Benjamin G. Sebena, 30, was accused of ambushing his wife, 30-year-old Jennifer Sebena, on Christmas Eve as the Wauwatosa police officer conducted a solo pre-dawn patrol. He told investigators he was a jealous husband and had been stalking her.

Ben Sebena, charged with first-degree intentional homicide, initially pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. But two separate doctors said that while the former Marine suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues, he wasn't insane at the time of the crime.

In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors have agreed to recommend that Sebena be eligible for parole in 50 to 60 years. A conviction of first-degree intentional homicide carries a mandatory life sentence but a judge could allow for parole after 20 years.

Defense attorney Michael Steinle said it was Sebena's idea to plead guilty, and that he'd been considering doing so for the last month or more.

"Quite honestly, he wants to get the decision done as quickly as possible," Steinle said.

As with every court appearance he has made, Sebena was brought into court in a wheelchair and wearing a padded suicide-prevention vest. He was silent except when entering his plea and responding to Judge David Borowski's questions.

The judge asked whether Sebena understood that his guilty plea meant he was acknowledging that he killed his wife, and that he meant to do so.

"Yes, sir," Sebena replied in a clear unwavering voice.

Steinle left court without talking to reporters. Sebena's family also declined to speak to reporters.

Sebena was due to face trial next month, at which point prosecutors would certainly have introduced incriminating statements Sebena made to police.

He had acknowledged lying in wait for his wife outside the fire department where officers often take their breaks. He said he saw her and opened fire, and when she reached for her weapon he grabbed it from her holster and used it to shoot her in the face three or four times. He told investigators he wanted to make sure she was dead so she wouldn't suffer.

Jennifer Sebena had told a colleague a few weeks before her death that her husband had acted violently toward her and put a gun to her head, prosecutors said. Detectives who searched the couple's home found a gun with ammunition matching the bullet casings found at the scene. They also found Jennifer Sebena's service weapon stashed in the attic.

Ben Sebena's defense attorney, Michael Steinle, tried to have some of Sebena's comments to police thrown out because officers hadn't immediately informed him he had the rights to remain silent and have an attorney present. But Judge David Borowski ruled last week that police didn't need to read him his Miranda rights immediately because he didn't become a suspect until later.

Ben Sebena served two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 2005 after suffering severe arm and leg injuries in a mortar attack.

He will be sentenced Aug. 9.

id America New Metropolitan

A mere two years ago, I'd rather have watched a Giglio/Ishtar double feature than review a pair of earphones that cost less than $30. It's not me being a snob, there's just a minimum, baseline price for anything?a car, a television?below which you can safely say: This is crap. My minimum, for years, was $45 for earphones and headphones?below that and I knew to expect distortion, no bass response, tinny highs, and a poor fit. Lucky for the budget-minded audio enthusiast, the times have rapidly changed for cheap earphones, and there are now options like id America's New Metropolitan. At $29.95 (direct), these simple earphones deliver powerful audio, including deep bass at high volumes, without distorting. Do they sound as good as an earphone pair that costs $50 or more? Nope, but they sound far better than they should at this price.

Just so we're clear, we are referring to the "New Metropolitan" earphones?the only pair for sale on id America's website, and the second, re-tuned version of the Metropolitan to be released.

Design
As a New York resident, I was intrigued by the marketing of these earphones. "Born in New York" is printed on their carrying pouch and the ear pieces themselves. The fine print on the included manual tells you they were designed in New York, but Made in China. Rest assured, just about every pair of earphones or headphones I review is made overseas, except for a few models from boutique brands. But these earphones were?conceived in New York and born in China, as are a lot of products out there?not a particularly special claim. The marketing is a little misleading beyond a simple case of semantics, so I thought we'd clear that up before moving along.

That said, as a New York resident, I'm quite pleased with the design?of the New Metropolitan, which was done here.?The earpieces (which are offered in six different color options, including blue, pink, and black, like our test pair) are lightweight and fit securely. Three pairs of silicone ear tips (small, medium, and large) are included with the earphones, but they ship with a pair of Comply foam ear tips already on. I suggest trying the Comply tips first?if you roll them up (while still on the earphones) and then place them at the base of your ear canal, the foam expands slowly, blocking out a wide swath of ambient room noise, providing a secure fit, and ensuring there will be decent bass response.

The cloth-bound cable for the New Metropolitan can be noisy when it moves around or thumps against your chest. Not ideal, but for $30, there are going to be some annoyances. Amazingly, a single-button remote control, which controls playback and track navigation, and a microphone for mobile devices is included. Let's keep in mind that some more expensive brands offer two versions of their earphones?one with and one without a remote and mic?and the difference in price is typically in the ballpark of $20-30. That's the price of these earphones, period.id America Metropolitan inline

Call clarity through the inline microphone is fine, and the remote is functional (no volume controls, but again: it's $30!).

Performance
On tracks with intense sub-bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," you might expect the Metropolitan to offer little or no bass response, or worse, to distort like crazy at higher volumes. Wrong! At maximum (and quite unsafe) listening levels, the New Metropolitan doesn't distort at all. Even more impressive, it delivers fairly robust bass for the price. For $30, it's a solid impersonation of a higher-end earphone pair, and that is meant as an earnest compliment. Five years ago, nothing this price sounded like this?not even close.

On Bill Callahan's "Drover," we get a better sense of the New Metropolitan's overall sound signature. It's not amazing?the bass boosting adds too much thump to the drums, and too much low-mid resonance to Callahan's baritone vocals. The crisp edge that is needed in order to balance out the bass response isn't quite there, though there's some tweaking in the high-mids that adds some extra, unwanted sibilance in spots.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" suits the sound signature of the New Metropolitan far more naturally. The kick drum loop's attack gets the treble edge that Bill Callahan's voice doesn't, and the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat are delivered with a decent amount of gusto. Vocals are neither muddy nor crisp, but they sit in the mix well and are clear and intelligible. Vocals that lack the baritone qualities of Callahan's, like Kanye West's or Frank Ocean's,?seem to fare better in terms of clarity through these earphones.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," also sound pretty solid through the New Metropolitan. The bass boosting gives lower register strings and brass a little extra richness, and the higher register strings and brass already pack enough crispness to fend for themselves. This is by no means an ideal sound?the mids seemed scooped out of the mix at times, and sometimes the growl of the brass sounds harsh?but again: These sound are $30 earphones.

In fact, it's hard to say anything really bad about the New Metropolitan without immediately following it with "but they're only $30!" We've tested a pair, the RHA MA150, that is even cheaper and offers reasonable enough audio quality that, if you really want to save money, should probably win out over this pair, though the MA150 lacks an inline remote. Of course, there are also the ubiquitous Apple EarPods, which are a tremendous improvement over Apple's original earbuds. And if you have a little more money to spend, the JBL J22i boasts deep bass and the Sennheiser CX 685 SPORTS has better overall audio performance, though it lacks a remote. All told, the id America New Metropolitan is a steal, and makes me wonder how good $30 earphones will sound like in another five years.

Bomb explodes in eastern Lebanon near Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese security officials say a roadside bomb has exploded on the highway linking Beirut to the Syrian capital without causing casualties.

The officials say the small bomb went off Tuesday morning near the town of Barr Elias, a few kilometers (miles) from the border crossing point of Masnaa.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The bomb comes a day after Lebanese troops fought heavily armed followers of a hard-line Sunni Muslim cleric holed up in a mosque in the southern city of Sidon.

Troops stormed the complex Monday. It includes the mosque where cleric Ahmad al-Assir used to preach.

On Tuesday troops were clearing the complex of explosives.

The fighting left 16 soldiers and at least 20 gunmen dead. Al-Assir's fate is still unknown.

Monday, June 24 Commentary

We?ve pulled together a compilation of our notes on these six final jurors (and the four alternates) here: Meet the Zimmerman Trial Jurors.

Today marks the first day of the trial proper, with opening statements. It is with these statements that both the State and the defense will set out their theory of the case.

To date, the State?s apparent theory has been that Zimmerman ?profiled, chased, and killed Martin.?

The theory of the defense, in addition to challenging the underlying criminality of Zimmerman?s alleged ?profiling? and ?chasing,? is that Zimmerman?s killing of Martin was done in necessary and lawful self-defense, as provided under Florida law.

LUNCH RECESS UPDATE

Today marked the first day of the trial proper of Florida v. Zimmerman, and accordingly was the first opportunity for each side to present their ?theory of the case? to the jury.

As is the norm, the State spoke to the jury first. This is a powerful advantage for any prosecutor. The first time the jury is presented with a cohesive vision of the events underlying the trial it is done from the perspective of the defendant?s guilt.

In addition, the opening statement provides the prosecutor with an unusually broad opportunity to establish a conceptual framework of guilt constructed wholly of the State?s view of the evidence. Once the State begins its formal presentation of its case it will face substantially greater restrictions on what it can say and how it can say it.

Given this relative ?freedom of action,? it is during the opening statement that the State should really hit a ?home run.? Up until the State?s opening is completed, the only substantive information that the jury will know of the case will have come from the State?s perspective. If immediately after hearing the State?s opening one isn?t strongly disposed to believe in the defendant?s guilt, is it unlikely that the juror will be more convinced after the State?s evidence has been subjected to a vigorous cross and the defense has had the opportunity to present it?s own side of the case. I suggest that the State?s opening statement is where they set the ?high water mark? for guilt.

With this context in mind, there were three aspects of the State?s opening statement that I found particularly remarkable.

First, that it was State Attorney Guy who made the opening, rather than his boss, de la Rionda, or for that matter his boss?the special prosecutor actually appointed by the Florida governor to bring this to trial, Angela Corey. (Both de la Rionda and Corey were present in the court room.)

Second, the brevity of Guy?s comments?from start to finish his opening remarks took a mere 30 minutes. Given that the vital strategic importance of the opening statement, the State?s relative ?freedom of action? at this stage of the proceeding, and the fact that this is a murder in the second degree case of national prominence and in which the State has surely invested well in excess of a million dollars, a 30 minute opening seems a rather modest effort.

Third, the almost complete absence of evidentiary basis for the State?s opening. Attorney Guy opened by quoting Zimmerman?s brief cursing on the non-emergency call, placing considerable emphasis on this as evidence of an ?evil mind?, and then went on to rely far more on dramatic intonations than on actual facts in evidence. Even worse from the State?s perspective, many of the facts he did mention would seem favorable to the defense?for example, that there had been a recent surge in crime in Zimmerman?s neighborhood.

Many other facts seemed an effort to shock the jury, but were of little or no relevancy to guilt. He repeatedly referenced the fact that Zimmerman?s handgun was loaded to its normal capacity, as if this showed some evil intent. In fact, every Sheriff?s deputy in that court room has his sidearm loaded in exactly the same manner, as intended in the gun?s design. Similarly, he kept referring to the handgun as a ?semi-automatic,? which it certainly is, but he may as well have been referring to its color or barrel length for all the relevancy it has to whether Zimmerman acted in lawful self-defense or committed murder in the second degree.

There also seemed to be an almost desperate effort to recast marginally interpretable pieces of evidence as instances of Zimmerman lying outright to the police and others. Guy mentioned, for example, that Zimmerman claimed Martin attacked him ?right after? the end of Zimmerman?s non-emergency call to police. Guy almost seemed to shout, ?Ah-HAH!? with a pointed finger in the air when he informed the jury that in fact a whole two minutes had lapsed between the end of the call and the start of the confrontation.

In summary, the State?s opening remarks seem to me to be a very weak effort, indeed.

In contrast, Attorney West appears almost Terminator-like in his presentation of the defense?s theory of the case, their compelling narrative of George Zimmerman?s innocence, the desperate fight for his life, the final instant when only his gun could save him, and George barely surviving, bloody and staggering, his brush with death.

West rolled out exhibit after exhibit, including Google map images of the housing complex generally and the scene of the conflict in particular.

He played both Zimmerman?s non-emergency call to police as well as Witness #11?s 911 call, both their full-length and in a step-by-step fashion, comparing each portion to a timeline of events. The recordings made clear that the ?cursing? so strongly emphasized by the State was said in a tone of exasperation, not hatred.

He described how Zimmerman carried his gun loaded in the completely ordinary fashion, as he?d been taught by a friend who has long been a Federal law enforcement officer.

He placed the expected witness testimony in context, emphasizing the portions of that evidence that were consistent with George?s absence of either guilt or a depraved mind, and explaining why some testimony that suggested guilt would be shown to be impossible given the facts (for example, one witness claims that Zimmerman shot Martin in the back, but forensics clearly shows Martin was only shot once in the chest).

After 90 minutes of this West seemed prepared to continue indefinitely, but the Court called a lunch recess at 12:30. When the Court returns at 1:30PM West will resume his opening statement, and I would not be at all surprised if he continued for an additional 90 minutes.

OK, I need to grab a bite to eat myself. See you all back here at 1:30PM.

Real Property Scam Targets Kauai Residents | Hawaii Reporter

Kauai police department

REPORT FROM KAUAI POLICE DEPARTMENT - L?HU'E ? Kaua'i police have been notified of scammers claiming to represent the County of Kaua'i Real Property Tax Collection office in order to collect funds from unsuspecting residents. Police are advising the public to be extremely cautious when releasing personal information or sending money to unknown individuals.

??A resident recently notified us of a scam that appears to involve our office,? stated Deputy Finance Director Sally Motta. ?And we want to alert the public immediately to set the record straight on how our office accepts and collects payment, in hopes of preventing people from falling victim.?

According to the report, a female Kaua'i resident was contacted by an anonymous caller who claimed to represent the county?s Real Property Tax Collection office. The caller claimed that the woman was delinquent in her taxes and proceeded to request payment along with the woman?s personal information, including her name, age, date of birth and Social Security Number.

Sensing that something wasn?t quite right, the woman hung up the phone and immediately contacted the county?s tax office. In looking up her file, the tax clerk informed the woman that not only was she current on her payments, but no one from the tax office had made any such call.

The County of Kaua'i Real Property Tax Collection office takes this opportunity to inform the public of how property tax payments are solicited and collected:

  • Property owners will receive a notification in the mail reminding them of upcoming due dates for tax collection. The office also sends email reminders to those who have signed up for the email notification service.
  • Payments can be paid with a credit card online at?www.kauai.gov. Walk-in customers can pay by cash or check, and those mailing in payments must pay by check or money order. Only checks made payable to the ?Director of Finance? will be accepted.
  • Under no circumstance would a tax clerk call a property owner to solicit payment.
  • Payments are never accepted over the phone.

?Be very wary of disclosing your personal information over the phone, particularly with people you don?t know,? states Deputy Police Chief Michael Contrades. ?Generally speaking, if someone is soliciting your date of birth, Social Security Number, and bank account or credit card numbers, it?s a scam.?

Police praise the woman who reported this scam for her quick thinking.

?Scam artists can be very convincing,? adds Deputy Chief Contrades. ?To be safe, if you are contacted by someone claiming to represent a business or agency, and are being asked to disclose your personal information, the best thing to do is hang up and call the company to verify the legitimacy of the call.?

If you suspect a scam or suspicious activity, please call the Kaua'i Police Department immediately at 241-1711.

Garmin Monterra a 4-inch handheld Android GPS

Garmin Montera

Garmin today announced the Monterra, a handheld GPS device with a 4-inch display running Android. It's got a proper WIfi connection, and full access to Google Play.

The device itself is rugged and waterproof, Garmin says. It's loaded with sensors you'd expect in such a device, including a three-axis compass, accelerometer and gyroscope, barometric altimeter and built-in UV sensor. It's running a dual-band GPS and GLONASS as well. It's got an 8-megapixel camera as well that records video in 1080p. Bluetooth 3.0 is on board, as is NFC (useful for ... NFCing in the wilderness) and is ANT+ capable for those fitness trackers.

One of Garmin's standout features on the Montera, however, is 3D MapMerge, which combines multiple kinds of maps, like TOPO, basemap or BirdsEye imagery.

AJ Allmendinger wins NASCAR Nationwide race

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) ? Team owner Roger Penske gave AJ Allmendinger a second chance.

Now they both have a trophy to show for it ? and, perhaps, the foundation of a rebuilt racing career.

Allmendinger took the lead from Justin Allgaier with seven laps to go in regulation, then didn't get rattled through a late restart and two nerve-testing green-white-checkered overtime finishes, holding on to win Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

Afterward, he expressed appreciation for Penske, the team owner who originally let him go last season after he was suspended for violating NASCAR's substance abuse policy.

"It's just meant the world to me," Allmendinger said. "This was the only way I could repay him. I was trying so hard out there ? and, at times, probably over-trying."

Allgaier finished second, followed by Parker Kligerman, Owen Kelly and Sam Hornish Jr.

Allgaier won a road course race at Montreal last season but still tipped his cap to Allmendinger's road racing skills.

"I'm still not a road racer, I can assure you of that," Allgaier said. "Just watching AJ in front of me and seeing some of the places he was able to get away from me on that last green-white-checkered, I still have some stuff to learn."

It's Allmendinger's first win in NASCAR, but not his first at Road America. He won at the four-mile road course in Central Wisconsin in 2006, racing in the Champ Car Series.

"It's my favorite track now," Allmendinger said.

Billy Johnson led on a restart with eight to go, but he slid wide in Turn 5 and was passed by Allgaier and Allmendinger. Allmendinger then made the decisive move one lap later, snatching the lead from Allgaier at the top of the hill in Turn 6.

He'd have to defend his lead on three more restarts, fending off a charge from Allgaier with three laps to go and then facing two green-white-checkered finishes ? NASCAR's version of overtime.

Allmendinger once again took the lead, only to watch another caution come out for Michael Annett's accident to trigger a second overtime.

With drivers facing concerns about having enough fuel left on the second green-white-checkered restart, Allmendinger held on again to take the checkered flag and stop in Turn 5 to celebrate in front of the fans. Allmendinger even had enough fuel left to do a celebratory burnout.

"They weren't fun," Allmendinger said of all the restarts. "I had a lot of thoughts in my head about how bad that (stunk) having to do that. But it's part of the rules."

Regan Smith finished 32nd and leads the Nationwide Series standings by 28 points over Allgaier.

Defending race winner Nelson Piquet Jr. then had a rough moment before the race's halfway point, plowing into the back of Brian Scott's car. Piquet's hood crumpled in the crash, costing him any chance of contention.

Allmendinger then retook the lead on lap 26, bumping his way past Kelly on the exit of Turn 5. Allmendinger pulled away and quickly built a lead of more than two seconds ? and then Kelly lost second place when he came to a stop on the back side of the track, apparently out of fuel. After getting a push back to the pits from a safety vehicle, Kelly was able to get back in the race.

Most of the leaders then pitted with 19 laps to go ? right at the outer edge of most teams' fuel windows, making it unclear whether they had enough to make it to the end.

Meanwhile, Kenny Habul caused a moment of levity when he veered off course on the restart and collected a large advertising sign, which stuck to his nose for the better part of a lap before another caution came out.

The win was a big step for Allmendinger, whose racing career took a wrong turn last year when he failed a NASCAR drug test, resulting in a suspension and the loss of his ride at Penske Racing.

Allmendinger, who said he took a pill offered by a friend that turned out to be Adderall, was reinstated after completing a NASCAR-affiliated recovery program, and now is getting a limited second chance with the Penske team this year.

"I wouldn't have thought twice if he would have just kind of wrote it off and not called and went on," Allmendinger said of Penske. "He's got so much going on in his life. But he just kept checking up on me. I didn't expect anything from it. It was just nice to have a friend, somebody that I could bounce ideas off of."

Kilgerman, a friend of Allmendinger's off the track, is impressed by his resiliency.

"Once you've lost it all, I think you see a lot of times, you come back and you're better at what you do. I think we're seeing that right now with AJ."

A Glowing Pump That Lets Drivers Know You're Doing Roadside Repairs

A Glowing Pump That Lets Drivers Know You're Doing Roadside Repairs

There's a reason that Topeak's MiniRocket iGlow bike bump won a 2013 Red Dot Design Award: the transparent barrel encases a internal optical fiber that turns a small red LED into a brilliantly-visible glowing safety strip. And at just 67 grams, it adds minimal weight to your bike's frame, so it's easy to always keep on hand. A pair of watch-sized batteries powers it continuously for up to 50 hours on its brightest setting, and 100 hours when dimmed.

For $30 it will not only help you safe on the side of the road when you get a nighttime flat, it will also help get you home sooner rather than later. [Topeak via Gadget Review]

Dusty surprise around giant black hole

June 20, 2013 ? ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer has gathered the most detailed observations ever of the dust around the huge black hole at the centre of an active galaxy. Rather than finding all of the glowing dust in a doughnut-shaped torus around the black hole, as expected, the astronomers find that much of it is located above and below the torus. These observations show that dust is being pushed away from the black hole as a cool wind -- a surprising finding that challenges current theories and tells us how supermassive black holes evolve and interact with their surroundings.

Over the last twenty years, astronomers have found that almost all galaxies have a huge black hole at their centre. Some of these black holes are growing by drawing in matter from their surroundings, creating in the process the most energetic objects in the Universe: active galactic nuclei (AGN). The central regions of these brilliant powerhouses are ringed by doughnuts of cosmic dust [1] dragged from the surrounding space, similar to how water forms a small whirlpool around the plughole of a sink. It was thought that most of the strong infrared radiation coming from AGN originated in these doughnuts.

But new observations of a nearby active galaxy called NGC 3783, harnessing the power of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile [2], have given a team of astronomers a surprise. Although the hot dust -- at some 700 to 1000 degrees Celsius -- is indeed in a torus as expected, they found huge amounts of cooler dust above and below this main torus [3].

As Sebastian H?nig (University of California Santa Barbara, USA and Christian-Albrechts-Universit?t zu Kiel, Germany), lead author of the paper presenting the new results, explains, "This is the first time we've been able to combine detailed mid-infrared observations of the cool, room-temperature dust around an AGN with similarly detailed observations of the very hot dust. This also represents the largest set of infrared interferometry for an AGN published yet."

The newly-discovered dust forms a cool wind streaming outwards from the black hole. This wind must play an important role in the complex relationship between the black hole and its environment. The black hole feeds its insatiable appetite from the surrounding material, but the intense radiation this produces also seems to be blowing the material away. It is still unclear how these two processes work together and allow supermassive black holes to grow and evolve within galaxies, but the presence of a dusty wind adds a new piece to this picture.

In order to investigate the central regions of NGC 3783, the astronomers needed to use the combined power of the Unit Telescopes of ESO's Very Large Telescope. Using these units together forms an interferometer that can obtain a resolution equivalent to that of a 130-metre telescope.

Another team member, Gerd Weigelt (Max-Planck-Institut f?r Radioastronomie, Bonn, Germany), explains, "By combining the world-class sensitivity of the large mirrors of the VLT with interferometry we are able to collect enough light to observe faint objects. This lets us study a region as small as the distance from our Sun to its closest neighbouring star, in a galaxy tens of millions of light-years away. No other optical or infrared system in the world is currently capable of this."

These new observations may lead to a paradigm shift in the understanding of AGN. They are direct evidence that dust is being pushed out by the intense radiation. Models of how the dust is distributed and how supermassive black holes grow and evolve must now take into account this newly-discovered effect.

H?nig concludes, "I am now really looking forward to MATISSE, which will allow us to combine all four VLT Unit Telescopes at once and observe simultaneously in the near- and mid-infrared -- giving us much more detailed data." MATISSE a second generation instrument for the VLTI, is currently under construction.

Notes

[1] Cosmic dust consist of silicate and graphite grains -- minerals also abundant on Earth. The soot from a candle is very similar to cosmic graphite dust, although the size of the grains in the soot are ten or more times bigger than typical grain sizes of cosmic graphite grains.

[2] The VLTI is formed from a combination of the four 8.2-metre VLT Unit Telescopes, or the four moveable 1.8-metre VLT Auxiliary Telescopes. It makes use of a technique known as interferometry, in which sophisticated instrumentation combines the light from several telescopes into one observation. Although it usually does not produce actual images, this technique dramatically increases the level of detail that can be measured in the resulting observations, comparable to what a space telescope with a diameter of over 100 metres would measure.

[3] The hotter dust was mapped using the AMBER VLTI instrument at near-infrared wavelengths and the newer observations reported here used the MIDI instrument at wavelengths between 8 and 13 microns in the mid-infrared.

Russia's Putin warns state firm managers on performance

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investigators have found what they believe are human remains in a search of the former home of late New York mobster Jimmy Burke, suspected mastermind of the 1978 Lufthansa cargo heist, New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove told Reuters on Thursday. She said the medical examiner's Office is checking material FBI agents scouring the Queens home found a day earlier, and it appears they are human remains. "I think they are," Borakove said, declining to comment further. ...
